Media Literacy

_________________________________________________

“Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms.”

-Aspen Media Literacy Leadership Institute

Why do you need to be media literate?

“Today’s teens spend more than 7.5 hours a day consuming media — watching TV, listening to music, surfing the Web, social networking, and playing video games, according to a 2010 study of 8- to 18-year-olds conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The study also found a particular rise in time spent on mobile devices and an overall increase of about an hour and 20 minutes since 1999.”

-Washington Post

1.  The influence of media in our central democratic processes.

2.  The high rate of media consumption and the saturation of society by media.

3.  The media’s influence on shaping perceptions, beliefs and attitudes.

4.  The increasing importance of visual communication and information.  We live in a multi-media world.

5.  The importance of information in society and the need for lifelong learning.

-Len Masterman, Teaching the Media

Guiding  Questions:

Am I influenced by media?

How do I guard against being swayed against my will or better judgment?

What skills  could I acquire that would put me in charge?

If I learn how to create quality media projects myself, will I then be able to recognize quality when I see it elsewhere?
